Shopify Testimonials: Add a Reviews Widget and Video Section to Shopify
Shopify removed its own Product Reviews app in 2024, so most stores now bolt on a metered review app or paste three static quotes into a theme section. One embed gives you a live testimonial and reviews widget, video and text together, that you never hand edit again.

In short
There are three ways to put testimonials on a Shopify store, and they solve different jobs. You can drop a quote section from your theme and type the text in, which is free and static. You can install a product-review app that adds star ratings tied to each product and can feed Google Shopping rich results, which is the right tool when you need per-product ratings. Or you can paste one embed that renders a live brand-level testimonial and reviews widget, mixing customer video and written testimonials, styled to your theme. Shopify retired its native Product Reviews app on May 6, 2024 and now ships a standard product-review metaobject that review apps write to, so the collection flow (the request, the form, moderation) still comes from an app either way. Testimonials handles that collection with one request link: the customer records video or types a testimonial in the browser with no login and no app to install, you import the store reviews you already earned, you approve what goes live, and every embedded slider or Wall of Love updates on its own. You add it to Shopify through a Custom Liquid section in the theme editor, so it drops onto the home page, a product page, or a landing page without editing theme code. Pricing is flat and unlimited, so a store adding proof to twenty product pages, or an agency running several Shopify stores, pays once instead of per response or per view.

What you get
Shopify testimonials that founders, agencies, and SaaS teams can put live in minutes
Video where Shopify sections have none
Theme quote blocks and most review apps center on star ratings and text. The embed plays browser-recorded video testimonials inside the same widget on your product and home pages.
One embed, not a metered review app
Many Shopify review apps charge by orders, responses, or monthly views. One flat embed shows unlimited testimonials across every page of the store.
Drops in with Custom Liquid
Add a Custom Liquid section in the Shopify theme editor and paste the snippet. No theme code edit, no app block that ties you to one vendor.
Import the reviews you already have
Pull the store reviews and social proof you earned into one widget so a new store is not starting the Wall of Love from zero.
How it works
From one request link to embedded proof in four steps
Collect or import
Send one request link for video and text testimonials after fulfillment, and import the store reviews you already earned.
Style to your theme
Match your Shopify theme fonts, colors, and corner radius so the section reads as native, not bolted on.
Add a Custom Liquid section
In Online Store, Themes, Customize, add a Custom Liquid section where the proof goes and paste the snippet.
Approve and forget it
Every testimonial you approve appears on the storefront without reopening the theme editor.
Every plan mixes video testimonials and written quotes in one Wall of Love, and you embed it anywhere with a lightweight testimonial widget.

Testimonials on Shopify: what changed and where to place them
Shopify removed its own reviews app, so plan around it
Shopify retired the free Product Reviews app on May 6, 2024, and existing stores lost the display. In its place Shopify now ships a standard product-review metaobject definition that compliant review apps write to and that Liquid can render, but the parts that actually collect reviews, the email request, the submission form, and moderation, still come from an app. So the decision is not whether to add a tool, it is which tool. If you need per-product star ratings that feed Google Shopping and rich snippets, use a dedicated product-review app on the metaobject. If you need brand-level social proof, video testimonials, and a Wall of Love that works across the whole store, an embed is lighter and is not metered by order volume.
Product reviews and brand testimonials are two different assets
A product review is a star rating and a line of text attached to one SKU, and it earns its keep on the product page and in Google Shopping. A brand testimonial is a customer telling the story of why your store was worth buying from, and it earns its keep on the home page, the about page, and next to the cart. Most stores need both, and they should not fight for the same section. Keep the star ratings on the product grid and put the Wall of Love where a hesitant shopper decides to trust the brand at all. For layout ideas across page types, see how to display testimonials on your website.
How to add the embed without touching theme code
Online Store 2.0 themes such as Dawn, Refresh, Sense, and Studio let you add a section to any template from the theme editor. Open Online Store, Themes, Customize, pick the page, click Add section, and choose Custom Liquid. Paste the embed snippet into that block and position it like any other section. Nothing is written into your theme.liquid or product.liquid files, so a theme update will not wipe it and you can move or remove the section from the editor. The content lives in your testimonial widget library, not in the theme, so marketing can reorder proof without a developer.
Page speed and the Core Web Vitals cost of review apps
Shopify stores live and die on mobile conversion, and Core Web Vitals feed both conversion and Google ranking. Heavy review apps are a common culprit: they load large scripts, inject widgets that shift layout, and stack a second script when you add a separate testimonials tool. Keep to one embed that loads asynchronously and reserves its space so it does not cause layout shift, and if you also want Google reviews on the storefront, pull them into the same Google reviews widget rather than adding a third script. One widget for testimonials and imported reviews beats a review app plus a testimonial app plus a Google reviews app.
When to collect: after fulfillment, not at checkout
The best testimonial from a Shopify customer comes after they have received the product and used it, not the moment they pay. Trigger the request a set number of days after fulfillment, timed to when the customer has had the win they bought the product for. Ask for video from your happiest buyers, because a fifteen second clip of a real person holding your product outperforms any amount of copy. For the mechanics of asking, the guide to collecting testimonials covers timing, prompts, and follow-up.
Frequently asked
shopify testimonials: the questions people actually ask
How do I add testimonials to my Shopify store?
Three routes. Add a theme quote section and type the text in, install a product-review app for per-product star ratings, or paste one embed into a Custom Liquid section for a live testimonial and reviews widget. The embed is the only route that mixes customer video with text, updates itself as you approve new testimonials, and is not metered by your order volume.
Does Shopify have a built-in reviews feature?
Not anymore in app form. Shopify removed its free Product Reviews app on May 6, 2024, and now ships a standard product-review metaobject that third-party review apps write to. Themes still include static quote sections you fill in by hand, but there is no native way for a customer to submit a review or record a video, so collection needs a tool.
How do I add a testimonial slider to Shopify without an app?
Use a Custom Liquid section. In Online Store, Themes, Customize, pick the page, click Add section, choose Custom Liquid, and paste an embed snippet. It renders a live slider or wall of your approved testimonials, styled to your theme, and new approvals appear without editing theme code. This avoids adding another metered app to the store.
What is the difference between Shopify product reviews and testimonials?
A product review is a star rating and short comment tied to one product, shown on the product page and able to feed Google Shopping rich results. A testimonial is a broader customer story about your brand, best placed on the home page and near the cart, and it can include video. Most stores want both, kept in separate sections so they do not compete.
Can I add video testimonials to a Shopify product page?
Yes. Shopify can host a video you upload, but there is no native flow that lets a customer record one. Send a request link that opens the camera in the customer browser with no app to install, then embed the finished clip inside a Custom Liquid section on the product page alongside your text testimonials and star ratings.
Will a testimonial widget slow down my Shopify store?
It should not if it loads asynchronously and reserves its space so it does not shift layout. The real risk on Shopify is stacking apps: a product-review app, a separate testimonials app, and a Google reviews app each add a script and hurt mobile Core Web Vitals. One embed that shows testimonials and imported reviews together keeps the storefront fast and protects your conversion rate.
Social proof that converts, collected, not chased
Send one link, your customers record a video or text testimonial, and you embed a beautiful wall of proof on your site in minutes. Text and video, unlimited, at one flat price.
